XYDONIA / ザイドニア
A downloadable game for Windows
In the year 30XX, technology has made space travel an accessible feat. However, the legacy of planet Xydonia's inhabitants still remains a mystery to this day. Countless adventurers and opportunists ventured in search of the remains of this ancient civilization and its homeworld, but none of them lived to tell the tale.
Now it's your turn to uncover Xydonia's coordinates and reach for the ultimate goal, which could be eternal life, infinite knowledge or a sealed, limited edition copy of that shmup from 19XX!
XYDONIA is an old school arcade horizontal shoot 'em up, inspired by the Japanese milestones of the genre, such as R-Type, Gradius and Darius. Our goal is to bring you a game that looks, sounds and feels exactly like one of those classics, but retaining its own identity at the same time.
The game is currently being developed by a small team of 3 arcade junkies and has reached alpha stage.
The game was successfully funded through a Kickstarter campaign.
Huge thanks to everyone supporting us to help making this shmup dream come true!
- A return to the golden age of shmups with hardcore '90s arcade action
- A varied roster of characters, each with their own unique play style
- A killer YM2151+Sega PCM soundtrack featuring shmup legends Shinji Hosoe and Keishi Yonao
- Multiple paths of destruction for extended replayability and challenge
- Customize each playthrough with different equipment and assist characters
- A unique "scavenge" system that allows purchasing of upgrades and more
- Easy to learn, hard to master scoring/ranking system
- Old-school 16-bit Neo Geo style 2D graphics
- Two-player Co-op
If you encounter a crash, it could be caused by the CRT emulation shader not working with your graphics card.
Try updating your DirectX version and graphics card drivers.
If you experience low framerates during gameplay, try turning off the CRT Shader (press F11).
Every Xinput device is supported.
Keys will be rebindable in future revisions.
THANK YOU FOR PLAYING!

Playing the Betas for hours...
Please release a physically version with art book and soundtrack. I definitely will buy it.
I just read update #26 and thought it's time to played the AlphaV3 demo again. Great game! I love it! I know some things already changed, so I don't know if this has changed already but I would love to see them in the final game:
Button mapping. I play with an arcade stick and mappings with controllers in mind never work for me.
Audio out on TV. I play on a laptop connected to a TV via HDMI and noticed that there is no audio at all, at least on my machine. I switched audio to laptop manually, but there was no audio, too.
Keep on breaking bytes, guys! I love what you do!
I hope the final game is out soon. It looks really great. But also a bit of improvement need it I believe. After the boss was passed at some point all the graphics just shrunk making the visual aspect really tiny on the left of the screen. Apart from that I really enjoyed it!
I think its a cancelled project ? not heard anything new or updates from these programmers for quite a long time before the corona virus plannedemic, very good shoot em up with lots of potential is looking no more, what a shame :(
How is dev going?
Hello, I am having trouble accessing the game, normally "enter" would work and take me to the main screen but I tried pressing enter again and nothing happen and the game wouldn't start. So are there any keys that would work?
Hope you guys are safe in italy ? with all the chaos going on with this CROWN VIRUS epidemic.
This game rules. Good luck w/ the development.
Can you please give us the Steam Link too?
The controls are a bit confusing. For example, you have to press Enter on the title screen, but a different key in the other menus.
I really enjoyed the game a lot. There was one glitch in the beginning that had me confused on rather the game had crash or it was apart of the game. It's when you are fighting the monkey boss and somehow it transported me to the boss.
Other than that it's a great game
I am attaching my gameplay video for your viewing pleasure.
Good news this game not been cancelled.
Hope this Amazing shoot em up as not been cancelled ?, not seen or heard anything new about this game in quite a long time, hope its still an on going project, very good game and will purchase if it ever gets fully completed :)
this is my favorite game on this whole site mates
This would be a bliss on NEO GEO Systems <3
Funny game. Interesting retro graphics. Simple but efficient. Well done, devs.
Found this game because of a itch.io page reference and have to say page is pretty cool and game looks amazing. Nice work, devs!
Amazing, with one glaring flaw.
Theres simply not enough of it. Seriously. This game is so amazing and I can not wait for you guys to finish it. Its got some of the prettiest arcade graphics mixed with spot on game play that made me audibly sigh and go awwww when it was over.
Very good job! I want to contact you in private, can you send me your e-mail adress?
XYDONIA takes me back to my childhood experiences as an arcade junkie and a pinball wizard.
The gameplay blows me away as being as close to true to real arcade performance as possible. Even on an XBox One controller, the game controls and feels like I'm behind an arcade cabinet. Hey, if you make enough money on the Kickstarter, you should build an arcade cabinet build of this!
Graphically, it's absolutely beautiful. It's impossible to truly emulate the CRT experience, but y'all do an incredible job making this look as close to the real thing as possible. The same thing goes with the soundtrack.
In the end, XYDONIA's come a long away from an already amazing alpha a few months ago. It's going to be interesting how much higher y'all set the bar as they continue production on this game.
Seems like great game but if its not WASD movement i can't play any game
some kind of button config would be nice or just add WASD option
Just discovered this game today and loving it so far, really excited to try out some new ships and levels. One of the best hori shmups i have played in years keeping my eye out for an updated version.
Keep up the good work guys.
I had to comment as this game is just stunning on every level! I'm a big retro arcade shoot 'em up fan (I collect old arcade cabs and PCBs) and I can't recall the last shoot 'em up to feel like a true 90's arcade classic. You've nailed it on every level. Like the person below, I came here searching for a way of donating money to the project or finding a way of paying for the game but I see you have a Kickstarter coming which is great news indeed. Consider me a backer and someone that will spread the word around!
Good luck with your continued development, I can't wait to see more of this game!
Thank you very much! We're working very hard in order to make a game that looks, sounds and feels as close to the arcade classics as possible, so we're always very pleased to get this kind of feedback from retrogamers. We're about to complete a new demo build, which we're going to release very soon. We'll soon announce the Kickstarter's launch date as well, so keep an eye on our social pages!
Xydonia seems super awesome! Just played the alpha! I have been looking a shmup EXACTLY like this so thank you for answering to my wishes <3
How can I throw money at your way, should I feel the urge to do so? Also, if I may inquire, how early or late you are currently on the game? THANKS! YOU ARE GREAT PEOPLE FOR DOING THIS.
Thanks! One of the main reasons we started doing this was having exactly the same wish, so we ended up making it ourselves! We're doing our best and we're always happy to see you guys so excited by our work!
If you want to support us, there will be a way to do so very soon, as we are setting up a crowdfunding campaign that will be launched in the next months. This will give us the chance to fully focus on the game and speed up its development, which is advancing steadily, but currently has to coexist with whatever we do to pay our bills. :)
Anyway, feel free to follow us on Twitter/Facebook if you're interested in our progress!
Linux version!? :/
The game is being developed for Windows first, but we will consider porting it to Linux and Mac too. :)
How do I open rar files?
Looks absolutely awesome! Great job!
Great demo! the art style is really nice and retro. the two characters are cool. Suggestion add a difficulty option so it's more accommodating for younger players.
